Strategic Planning Committee Charge
In 2013, the Center's Strategic Planning Committee was charged with:
- Developing a vision and mission statement for the Center that places the agency and empowerment of students of color as the primary emphasis of its work.
- Devising a five-year strategic plan focused on critical reflection and informed action, leadership development, and social justice education for students of color and their allies.
- Recommending a new name for the Center to President Paxson that reflects the spirit and legacy of student activism among communities of color.
Final Report and Recommendations
After completing their charge, the Committee submitted their final report and recommendations to the Campus Life Committee of the Brown University Corporation for feedback and to President Paxson for final approval.
Acceptance
On September 10, 2014, Professor Campbell, Vice President Klawunn, and Dean Mandel announced that President Paxson accepted the Committee’s report and recommendations. President Paxson also affirmed the role and work of Brown Center for Students of Color by investing in much-needed facilities improvements.

Although the term “Third World” may have negative socioeconomic connotations outside of Brown, Third World students here continue to use the term in the context originating from the Civil Rights Movement.
The Brown Center for Students of Color name reflects the revised mission statement and is in alignment with other campus centers (i.e., LGBTQ Center, Sarah Doyle Women's Center). BCSC also signals a clear focus on students of color and thereby reduces confusion about who the Center primarily serves.
The Brown Center for Students of Color (BCSC) provides a place and space for students of color at Brown University to explore their identity, develop their leadership skills, and build a sense of community in a welcoming and supportive environment.
